Good news, Honda fans: The Fit EV is coming to the United States! Lucky drivers overseas have been able to get behind the wheel of a Honda EV for nearly a year now, but select markets in the U.S. and Canada are set to get their own Honda Fit EVs next summer.
We first saw the production model Fit EV at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and later at a Honda press event just before the Tokyo Motor Show. And we're prepared to see more and more of it before its official release in 2012. However, rumor has it then when it does arrive on our shores, production will be limited to 1100 models, so if you want one, you better start getting ready for it.
Wondering what makes Honda's electric vehicle so alluring? Well to start with, the motor produces 123-hp and 189 lb-ft of torque, and is powered by a 20-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. EPA range on the window sticker should hover around 76 miles, based on a consumption figure of around 29 kWh per 100 miles. The battery pack is mounted under the vehicle, resulting in a raised floor that reduces interior room by about three inches from the original Honda Fit. However, there's still plenty of headroom, and the backseats fold flat for cargo space and utility.
Early reports laud the Fit EV for its supreme handling and power, and that only makes us more excited to try it out when it rolls into the Rick Roush Honda showroom at 3157 Medina Rd Medina, OH 44256. Stayed tuned to learn more about it as we get closer to the release date!
